English Language Requirements for UK Visa Applications

Most UK visa applications require applicants to meet a certain level of English. The
required level varies depending on the type of visa but is typically B1 for skilled workers
and B2 for Innovator Founders. There are several ways to meet the English language
requirement:

  1. Nationality: Applicants who are nationals of certain majority English-speaking
countries, such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, India, the USA, and British
Overseas Territories, are exempt from the English language requirement.

  2. Education: Applicants holding a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. degree from a
UK university in English are also exempt from the English language requirement.

  3. Ecctis: Applicants who have a degree from an educational establishment outside
the UK (such as a foreign university) must have their degree and English level
verified by Ecctis. This can be done through the Ecctis website (ecctis.com). The
process usually takes 10 working days, or within two days by using the fast-track
service with an additional fee. Confirmation from Ecctis will be required for your
    visa application.

  4. SELT: Applicants can also meet the English language requirement by taking a
Secure English Language Test (SELT) at a Secure English Language Test
center that has been approved by the UK Home Office. A unique reference
number will be given which you will need for your visa application. The Home
Office can then check your results online via this unique reference number.

  5. Previous Grant of Leave: If you met the English language requirement in your
previous grant of leave at the level required for your current application, you are
deemed to have met the English language requirement. For example, if you are
switching from a student visa to a skilled worker visa.

  6. UK Education: If you studied in the UK before the age of 18 and had a GCSE, A
level, Scottish National Qualification at level 4 or 5, or Scottish Higher or
Advanced Higher, in English (language or literature), the English language
    requirement is also met.

  7. Regulated Professional Bodies: For skilled workers under certain categories:
doctor, dentist, nurse, midwife, or veterinarian, the English language requirement
is met if it is accepted by the relevant regulated professional body as a
    requirement for registration.

  8. Student Visa: For student visas, the English level can be assessed by the
student sponsor (education provider) internally. It will be confirmed on the CAS
    issued by the sponsor.
